The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
Description: Keen, bright eyes of long-cracked amber peer out at the world below sharp, dark eyebrows and long eyelashes, giving Iolas a look of refinement that might, perhaps, clash with his appearance. His jaw is sharp and thin, as are the rest of his features, all lacquered in a tanned, sun-favored shade that pegs him squarely as a member of Thalerith society. Cross-sections of bone hang from his ears, and his hair, pulled back into a ponytail, bound for several inches by a length of hempen rope. Falling past his bladed ears are near-symmetrical braids, encased halfway-down by a hollowed segment of red-painted bone, carved intricately.
(He has a look of uncertainty about him, but appears rather nonchalant in the moment. A few fresh layers of sand cake his shin-high boots, and a bit of dirt stains his breeches.)
Personality: Practical but prone to bouts of exuberance, Iolas's demeanor perhaps clashes on occasion with the more traditional values of Thalerith society. Be it residual dregs of youthful confidence or a spark in his blood, always has Iolas sought the unknown, even at the expense of doing things the smart way. Clever, cunning, sure, but the willowy Elf certainly lacks some foresight that comes with age, and the reservedness of a more tight-lipped upbringing. That being said, patience suits him well in moments of concentration, and experience creases around his eyes and across his weathered hands. He's long-since earned his rites of first-kill, but that's no excuse for laying back. Strung like a shortbow, Iolas looks like someone ready to bury himself to the feathers in a new, peculiar task.
Background: Descendant of the first Flame Speaker of the Thalerith, Iolas has always focused the brunt of his attention not on the tradition of Flame Speaking itself, but in the actions surrounding it; where did Sedriel of the Flame go on her pilgrimage into the Nashari dunes? What can one seek in the desert? History - sure, great, but what seed of truth sprouted legend? Despite various attempts at maintaining practice in Thalerith oral history, Iolas has always felt more at home in unfamiliar situations, rather than confined to the dry bindings of past teachings, records, and legend (though they have their uses). He aspires to venture out and explore whatever is beyond the dunes of Nashari, perhaps finding out more of Sedriel's pilgrimage, or uncovering something of legend, of interest, of renown. A sure-fired explorer at heart, Iolas still made good on Thalerith tradition as he grew older - the hunt, the rituals, participating in feats of strength, all occupied him well, but none were his true calling: the unknown, the unexplored, the untamed wilds.
